What Is Plantar Fasciitis?

Heel spurs and plantar fasciitis often coexist, but the spur itself is rarely the cause of pain — the fascia irritation is. If an MRI is ordered, it's to rule out a fascia tear, stress fracture, or nerve entrapment.
What Actually Helps
Here's where things get practical. Plantar fasciitis responds well to conservative treatment, but treatment takes consistency.
Stretching and strengthening. This is the single most evidence-backed approach. Calf stretches, Achilles stretches, and plantar fascia-specific stretches (pulling your toes back before getting out of bed) reduce morning pain significantly when done consistently. Towel scrunches and single-leg calf raises strengthen the supporting muscles.
Supportive footwear. Shoes with adequate arch support and cushioning reduce the load on the fascia. This isn't just about "comfortable" shoes — it's about mechanics. A shoe that controls how your foot strikes the ground makes a real difference.
Custom orthotics. Generic insoles address the average foot. Custom orthotics are made from an impression of your specific foot, which means they support your exact arch height, distribute weight according to your gait pattern, and offload pressure from the fascia attachment point.
